Dr. Brian Aguado Receives Prestigious NSF CAREER Award to Advance Sex-Inclusive Biomedical Research

This summer, Dr. Brian Aguado of UC San Diego’s Department of Bioengineering is celebrating a major milestone: receiving the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award. This competitive grant will fund Dr. Aguado’s pioneering research in the Aguado Lab, where he and his team are developing bioengineered cell culture platforms to investigate how sex chromosomes modulate disease and treatment outcomes.

With long-term goals to design sex-specific therapies and to educate future generations of bioengineers on the importance of including sex as a biological variable in research, Dr. Aguado’s work is poised to transform the field of precision medicine.

“This award is not just an investment in our science - it’s an opportunity to build a more inclusive and effective approach to healthcare,” Aguado shared. “We’re committed to using this platform to its fullest potential.”

Congratulations to Dr. Aguado and the entire Aguado Lab on this exciting achievement!

Bridging Rainforest and Space: An International Neuroscience Collaboration

UC San Diego’s Muotri Lab and Brazil’s Federal University of Amazonas are joining forces to explore the neuroactive potential of Amazonian bioactive compounds. This innovative research will examine how these natural substances interact with brain organoids in microgravity, combining neuroscience, space science, and biodiversity. The project emphasizes global collaboration and the importance of preserving the Amazon for future scientific and medical breakthroughs.

How a Y Chromosome Gene May Shape the Course of Heart Valve Disease

A team led by Brian Aguado, Ph.D. and Rayyan Gorashi found that this Y-linked gene triggers calcium buildup in the heart valve of males earlier on—meanwhile, females experience stiffening of the heart valve due to fibrosis.
