November 13, 2011 Grand Opening The grand opening of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine’s new “Collaboratory” was a milestone occasion. More than 400 friends and colleagues gathered on November 29, 2011 to celebrate the completion of the next leg of a remarkable journey.
That journey began with the 2004 passage of Proposition 71, which provided $3 billion for a California enterprise in stem cell science. In 2006, four San Diego research institutions (later joined by a fifth) launched an unprecedented regional alliance. At our 2010 groundbreaking, we envisioned a gleaming facility that would accelerate the translation of basic discoveries in stem cell research into new therapies for devastating disorders.
That vision has been realized in a first-of-its-kind facility that provides 150,000 square feet of space designed for focused individual and collaborative team research. In its first month of operation, the Collaboratory has come alive as researchers from our collaborating organizations – the Salk Institute, the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, UC San Diego, and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology – have begun moving in and setting up shop.
On behalf of the Sanford Consortium Board of Directors, I want to thank our speakers and all of our supporters who joined in the November 29 celebration. I hope you enjoy browsing through our photo gallery from the ceremony and a sampling of news coverage of the opening.
