Executive Team

Edward W. Holmes, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer Edward W. Holmes, M.D., is a Distinguished Professor of the University of California and Vice Chancellor/Dean Emeritus of Health Sciences at UC San Diego. He is also Executive Deputy Chairman of the Biomedical Research Council and Chairman of the National Medical Research Council, Singapore.

Holmes has served on numerous advisory boards including the National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health, the Board of Directors of Tularik, and the Scientific Advisory Board of GlaxoSmithKline which he chairs. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Holmes holds a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey A. Steindorf, Ph.D., Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey A. Steindorf is the Chief Operating Officer of the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine. Involved in higher education administration for over 30 years at the University of California, San Diego, he served as Associate Vice Chancellor for campus planning. In that capacity, Steindorf provided leadership in capital planning, enrollment planning, indirect cost rate management, institutional research, and physical planning. Prior to assuming administrative responsibilities, he conducted postdoctoral research in sociopolitical cognition and decision-making processes at the Center for Human Information Processing, formerly an organized research unit at UC San Diego, and studied at the International Consortium for Political Research at the University of Michigan. Dr. Steindorf received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Northern Illinois University and his B.S. in Psychology from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

Gary F. Raisl, MBA, Ed.D., Vice President, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer Gary F. Raisl, MBA, Ed.D., is the executive vice president, chief administrative officer, chief financial officer and treasurer for the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. In this role, Dr. Raisl provides strategic direction and oversees the day-to-day administrative and financial operations of Sanford-Burnham’s California and Florida campuses.

Prior to joining Sanford-Burnham in March 2009, he was vice president for finance and administration at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Washington. Prior to that, Dr. Raisl served as vice president for finance and administration and treasurer at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Neumann College. Dr. Raisl began his career in finance and administration at the City University of New York and Bronx Community College.

Dr. Raisl received his B.A. with honors from the University of Notre Dame; his M.A. and M.Phil., degrees from Columbia University; his M.B.A. from Widener University and his doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania. He has also studied at Harvard University's School of Education, Harvard Business School, Yale University's School of Management and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Gary C. Matthews, Vice President & Secretary Gary C. Matthews, a recognized leader in higher education management, is Vice Chancellor for Resource Management & Planning (RM&P) at the University of California, San Diego. As Vice Chancellor for RM&P, Matthews is responsible for some of the University’s most critical functions, including: policy development and management of the campus operating and capital budgets, capital planning, land-use planning, facilities design and construction, real estate development, audit and management advisory services, and administrative records.

Matthews holds a Master of Social Work degree with an emphasis on Policy Administration and Research from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a B.A. in Government from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York.
